WHAT IS BROADWAY THEATRE PROJECT?

Broadway Theatre Project is a three-week, intensive, musical theatre training program. Students attend classes in the three disciplines of musical theatre - acting, dance and voice. The project focuses on creating a well-rounded musical theatre performer. The BTP faculty is made up of working professionals from both Broadway and theatre and film around the world.

WHAT IS A DAY AT BTP LIKE?

Classes are held seven days a week from 8:30am until 10:00pm. A typical day includes two dance classes, two vocal classes and two acting classes. Apprentices are also given the opportunity to sign up for private vocal and acting lessons. Evenings are spent either in rehearsals for the final performances or in additional classes. Specialty classes such as Stage Combat, Broadway Repertory, and Audition Workshop are also included in the schedule. Classes are divided into groups of about 30 based on abilities in each discipline. Guest Artist days may be different in that all Apprentices gather together for special Question and Answer sessions and/or Master Classes with artists such as Ben Vereen, Patrick Wilson and Frank Wildhorn.

WHAT IS A BROADWAY THEATRE PROJECT APPRENTICE?

Students at Broadway Theatre Project are referred to as Apprentices. Apprentices are considered up and coming professionals and take classes in this professional environment. All Apprentices participate in the set BTP curriculum as well as perform in the final performance.

WHAT ARE THE DATES OF THE PROJECT?

July 11-August 1, 2010

The BTP festival will be held from July 29 - July 31, 2010

Students depart Saturday night, July 31st after the reception or Sunday, August 1st by 11:00am

WHAT ARE THE AGE REQUIREMENTS?

Students must be at least 16 years of age by the beginning of the Project. There is no top age limit although most of our students are under 25 years old. Applicants not falling within this age range may still audition and will be considered on a case by case basis.

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO BE ACCEPTED INTO BTP?

Applicants must excel in at least one of the disciplines of musical theatre, acting, voice or dance. Applicants must have an interest in strengthening their skills in all areas of musical theatre and will be required to study all of these areas when attending the project.

HOW ARE APPRENTICES PLACED IN CLASSES?

Placement is based on audition performance and age. Students are placed in a class group based on their level of expertise in each discipline and age. Once the Project begins, students are observed at additional auditions to verify that placement is correct and class groups are adjusted, if necessary.

HOW DO I GET ACCEPTED?

Students interested in attending BTP must attend a live audition or submit an audition via DVD. Applications must include a letter of recommendation, photograph and a $35.00 audition fee.

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE ACCEPTED?

About 200 students are accepted. Students are spilt into 7 class groups of about 30 per class.

HOW MANY PEOPLE AUDITION?

Several hundred students audition at 6 live audition sites as well as via DVD.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR THE AUDITION?

16 bars of a song
1-minute monologue

There are no specific requirements for the songs or monologues. Applicants should simply choose pieces that they feel best show their strengths.
Applicants will also be taught both jazz and tap combinations at the audition and should come prepared to dance.

WHAT IS THE AUDITION LIKE?

Upon arrival applicants will register and be assigned a number. Their application, letter of recommendation, audition fee and photograph will be collected.
Applicants will first be taught the jazz combination. After learning the combo they will be evaluated in groups of 4 to 5. The same process will then be followed for the tap audition. If applicants have no tap experience they will be allowed to sit out this part of the audition. When the dance audition is complete, students will go in order by numbers to perform their songs and monologues. When they have completed this they are released from the audition

HOW LONG DOES THE AUDITION LAST?

The audition lasts anywhere between 2 to 6 hours depending on the number of people in attendance. The dance portion of the audition takes at least two hours and the vocal/acting section takes about 3 minutes per person. So, for instance, number 10 can expect to be at the audition for about 2 and a half hours.

WHO SHOULD I ASK TO WRITE MY LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION?

Letters may come from any instructor who has worked closely with the student. Schoolteachers, college professors and performance instructors are all acceptable.

WHAT DO I DO IF I AM AUDITIONING BY VIDEO?

Taped auditions should include a full song, a one-minute monologue, a jazz combination and a tap combination.
The audition should be sent in DVD format along with application, letter of recommendation, audition fee and photograph.
The DVD can be made on a home video camera and does not need to be of professional quality.
It is acceptable to send cuts of live performances as long as the applicant can be clearly seen and is singing solo in the vocal section. Please give a thorough description of whom the candidate is if he or she is performing within a group.
Length of the dance combinations will be left to the applicant's discretion. About two minutes is sufficient.
If applicant does not have any experience the tap dancing section of the audition may be eliminated.

ARE MY CHANCES BETTER IF I ATTEND A LIVE AUDITION?

No, many students are accepted through taped auditions. The same audition team evaluates both taped auditions and live auditions

WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I AM ACCEPTED INTO BTP?

Acceptance letters are sent after the completion of each audition. There is also the possibility that students will be placed on a wait list. Wait List students could be offered a position with BTP as late as July.

WHAT IS THE COST?

The total cost of attending the 2010 session is $3500.00. Once a student has been accepted, a non-refundable deposit of $700.00 will be due. The balance of tuition, $2800.00, is due by May 26, 2010. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Broadway Theatre Project. No refunds are possible after June 11, 2010. Credit card payment is also available.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Limited scholarships are available and are awarded based primarily on financial need. Once a student has been accepted into the program, a financial aid form can be downloaded from the BTP website. Many students also get support from local businesses and organizations in their community.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TUITION?

The tuition payment includes arrival and departure transportation between Tampa International Airport and USF, housing for 3 weeks at the University of South Florida Embassy Suites Hotel and 3 meals a day, 7 days a week. It also includes participation in all classes held in the Fine Arts Complex at USF and Participation in the Broadway Theatre Project Festival.
